Fix the "Hold for Authentication" Error on Mac

Method 1: Retry in the print queue

  1. In the print queue of SLU Public Printing (the icon on your dock that looks like a printer), on the document showing the "Hold for Authentication" error, click the Retry button (the button that looks like a spiral, to the right of the X button).
  2. When prompted to enter your username and password, erase anything in the "Name" field, then enter your SLU Username and Password. (Your username is your email address without the "@stlawu.edu" portion.
  3. Press the Return key on your keyboard. The print job should now be sent successfully. If it disappears from the queue, that means it has been sent and your printing is working again.

Method 2: Keychain

  1. On your keyboard, press the Command and Spacebar keys at the same time to bring up the Spotlight Search.
  2. Search for "Keychain"
  3. Click on Keychain Access.
  4. On the left sidebar of Keychain Access, click the login button.
  5. In the list of passwords, scroll through until you find slu_public_printing_mobile.
  6. Right click OR hold Control and click on slu_public_printing_mobile.
  7. Click Delete slu_public_printing_mobile.
  8. In the box that appears, click Delete.
  9. Repeat steps 5 through 8 for slu_public_printing_mobile_color.
  10. The next time you print to SLU Public Printing, you will be prompted for your credentials. Enter your SLU Username and Password.

Additional Context

The "Hold for Authentication" issue is caused by your Mac trying to use your old SLU password with SLU Public Printing after you have changed your password. Once you have changed your password, it is a good idea to delete all of your old passwords in Keychain Access to avoid these errors
