iMovie Library Backup

Summary

This article explains how to back up your iMovie library in iMovie version 10. Your iMovie library contains all imported events and project files. Do not open any library files directly from a network drive as this could lead to data loss.

Body

iMovie Backup

  1. If iMovie is open, close iMovie
  2. Click Finder
  3. Click Go
  4. Click Home

Your iMovie events and projects are contained in the Movies folder. Copy this folder to an external or network drive to back it up.

Restore a Backup

  1. If iMovie is open, close iMovie
  2. Place the Movies folder back into your Home folder*
  3. Open iMovie

* iMovie will default to the library named iMovie Library

If you change the name of the library or are maintaining multiple libraries:

  1. Open iMovie
  2. Click File
  3. Click Open Library
  4. Click Other
  5. Click Locate and choose the library you want to open

iMovie can manage libraries from other locations on your hard drive or from an external drive, but not a network (e.g.. scratch or P) drive. Do not open any library files directly from a network drive as this could lead to data loss.
