Technology Recommendations for Students

This article provides specifics of what technology every new student should or should not bring to campus.

Recommended

  • Laptop
    • Review the hardware recommendations for laptop purchases
    • A note about Chromebooks: While a Chromebook can work for SLU students, please note that some of the services we provide are not directly compatible with these types of computers and students can expect some minor inconveniences if they intend to use these devices at SLU. 
  • Cell Phones and Tablets 
    • AT&T and Verizon are the supported carriers in the region.  IT can help connect to our network and set up email but cannot fix broken hardware. We will help find the best repair option
  • Game Systems, Apple TV, Roku, Kindle 

Not Recommended

  • Printer
    • SLU Public Printing is available to all students, faculty, and staff. IT does not repair personal printers and they cannot be connected to our network for wireless printing
  • Microsoft Office
    • Microsoft Office 365 is provided for free by the University. See instructions to install Office 365 on your device . We can also assist you with Microsoft Office 365 installation when you arrive on campus
  • Wireless router
    • Personal wireless routers are not allowed on campus. We provide wireless network in every academic, public, and residential building
  • Smart Home Devices (Wi-Fi controlled lighting, outlets, etc)
    • While smart speakers like Amazon Echo, Google Home, or Apple Homepod will work on campus and allow for audio streaming, other home appliance devices that connect to the Wi-Fi will not.
