Troubleshooting Common SLU VPN Issues on Windows

Overview

This knowledge base article covers three common issues with SLU VPN in Windows and provides troubleshooting steps for how to resolve them. If you encounter either of these issues on your own computer or while working with others, follow each of these steps to see if they can resolve the problem you are having.

Issue 1: SLU VPN Fails to Connect

  1. Remove the SLU VPN and set it up again
  1. Remove the SLU VPN and set it up again, but when asked for the server address, enter sluvpn.stlawu.edu instead.
  1. Check Credential Manager and remove any saved credentials for SLU VPN.
  1. Uninstall WAN Miniports from Device Manager:
    1. Delete the existing SLU VPN connection from the computer.
    2. Right click on the Start button
    3. Click Device Manager.
    4. In the Device Manager window, double-click Network Adapters to expand the list.
    5. Under Network adapters, double-click WAN Miniport drivers (IKEv2) to open driver properties.
      • If you cannot find  WAN Miniport drivers (IKEv2) under Network adapter, from the top menu bar, click View  >  Show hidden devices
    6. On the Driver tab, click Uninstall  or  Uninstall Device
    7. Follow the on-screen instructions.
    8. Repeat steps 4 to 6 to remove the following drivers:
    • WAN Miniport drivers (IP)
    • WAN Miniport drivers (IPv6)
    • WAN Miniport (SSTP)
    • WAN Miniport (PPTP)
    • WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
    • WAN Miniport (Network Monitor)
    • WAN Miniport (LT2P)
    • WAN Miniport (IKEv2)
    1. Follow the on-screen instructions and remove the WAN Miniport and TAP drivers
    2. In the Device Manager window, from the top toolbar, click Action and then click Scan for hardware changes
    3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install WAN Miniport device drivers.
    4. After the device driver installation is complete try setting up SLU VPN again.

Issue 2: Can Connect to SLU VPN, but not to SLU Resources

  1. Change your Split-Tunneling settings.
    • Try turning Split-Tunneling on if it is off, or vice-versa. To enable Split-Tunneling:
      1. Right-click the Windows 10 Start button and go to Network Connections.
      2. Click Change adapter options.
      3. Right-click your VPN connection and open Properties.
      4. In the Networking tab, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
      5. Click Advanced.
      6. In the General tab, click Advanced.
      7. Disable Use default gateway on remote network.
      8. Restart your VPN connection.
    • To disable split tunneling, go to the same place and enable Use default gateway on remote network. This method can be used to remotely connect to another PC, to access files through VPN and use the remote LAN resources while also staying connected to your home network.
  1. Edit network adapter metrics.
    • If you want to change the order in which Windows 10 uses network adapters, do the following:
      1. Open Settings.
      2. Click on Network & Internet.
      3. Click on Status.
      4. Click the Change Adapter options item.
      5. Right-click the network adapter you want to prioritize and select Properties.
      6. Select the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) item.
      7. Click the Properties button.
      8. In the "General" tab, click the Advanced button.
      9. Clear the Automatic metric option.
      10. In the "Interface metric" field assign a priority value for the adapter.
        • Quick Tip: The lower the metric number means higher priority, and a higher number indicates lower priority. Change the VPN network adapter to 5, wired network adapter to 10, and wireless network adapter to 15.
      11. Click the OK button.
      12. Click the OK button again.
      13. Click the Close button.
      14. Once you've completed the steps, Windows 10 will prioritize the network traffic depending on your configuration.

Issue 3: SLU VPN Sends SMS Code to your Mobile Device, but you are unable to enter it and the Connection Times-out

  1. Install the Microsoft Authenticator App with Push Notifications on your mobile device.
  1. Install the GlobalProtect VPN client to connect via other authentication methods.
    • If you do not have a device capable of installing the Microsoft Authenticator app, you can connect via GlobalProtect which supports all authentication methods (SMS code, Software and hardware OTP tokens).
      1. Instructions for installing and configuring the GlobalProtect VPN are listed here.
    • The GlobalProtect VPN does not currently support split-tunnel connections, which can increase network latency in some applications while connected. For the best network performance while connected to the VPN, use the Microsoft Authenticator app with push notifications to connect to SLU VPN instead.
